Use Klaviyo with Sam

Connect Klaviyo and Sam can report on your campaigns and revenue, keep profiles and lists up to date, and set off a flow you've already built by tracking an event. Sam doesn't write or send Klaviyo emails itself yet.

What Sam can look up in Klaviyo

  • Your profiles, lists and segments, and who is on each list
  • Your campaigns and flows
  • Campaign performance, such as opens, clicks and revenue, for any time range
  • The events you track, such as Placed Order, and totals for any of them over time

What Sam can do in Klaviyo

  • Create and update profiles, matching on email so there are no duplicates
  • Add profiles to a list, without changing their marketing consent
  • Subscribe profiles to a list for email marketing, which records consent and sends a double opt-in email. Asks you first.
  • Track a custom event for a profile, which can start a flow that sends real emails. Asks you first.

Anything marked Asks you first pauses and waits for you to confirm before it runs.

What Sam can't do in Klaviyo yet

  • Write, schedule or send Klaviyo campaigns. Sam writes the email in Sam, and you build it in Klaviyo.
  • Create segments or build flows.

Connect Klaviyo

What you'll need
  • →Permission to create API keys in your Klaviyo account.

Step 1 - Create a private API key in Klaviyo

  1. In Klaviyo, go to Settings > API keys and select Create Private API Key.
  2. Give it Read access to Accounts, Profiles, Lists, Segments, Campaigns, Flows and Metrics.
  3. Give it Write access to Profiles, Lists, Events and Subscriptions.
  4. Copy the private key. It starts with pk_.

Step 2 - Open the integrations marketplace

Select Connect your tools at the bottom of the left sidebar, above your profile. Search for Klaviyo or find it under Browse Integrations.

Step 3 - Paste it in and connect

Select Klaviyo, paste what you copied into the fields Sam shows, and select Connect. Once it succeeds, it moves to your Connected tab.

Paste only the key into Private API key, without the words "Klaviyo-API-Key". Sam adds those itself.

Leave every permission ticked

When you connect, you may see a screen of checkboxes, and some are easy to scroll past. Sam can only do what you allow. If you untick one, the matching actions in the list above will fail with a permission error.

If Sam says it can't reach Klaviyo later on, see When Sam can't reach one of your tools.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will Sam email my list without asking?
No. Subscribing profiles and tracking an event can both lead to real emails, so both stop and ask you to confirm first.

Can Sam start one of my Klaviyo flows?
Yes, if the flow starts from an event. Ask Sam to track that event for the profiles you want, and Klaviyo starts the flow for them.

What's the difference between adding someone to a list and subscribing them?
Adding puts them on the list without changing their marketing consent. Subscribing records consent and sends them Klaviyo's double opt-in email.
