Use WordPress with Sam

Connect your self-hosted WordPress site and Sam can write and edit posts and pages, search what is already there, and keep your categories and tags in order. New posts and pages start as drafts.

What Sam can look up in WordPress

  • Your posts and pages, including their full content
  • Everything on your site, found by search
  • Your categories, tags and media library
  • The WordPress user the connection belongs to

What Sam can do in WordPress

  • Create a post or page. It starts as a draft.
  • Update an existing post or page, including publishing a draft
  • Move a post to the trash, or delete it permanently. It can't be undone from Sam. Asks you first.

Anything marked Asks you first pauses and waits for you to confirm before it runs.

What Sam can't do in WordPress yet

  • Upload images to your media library yet. Sam can use images that are already there.
  • Delete pages.

Connect WordPress

What you'll need
  • →A self-hosted WordPress site on version 5.6 or later, served over HTTPS.
  • →An admin login for the site.

Step 1 - Create an application password in WordPress

  1. Log in to your WordPress admin dashboard.
  2. Go to Users > Profile and scroll to Application Passwords.
  3. Enter a name such as Sam and select Add New Application Password.
  4. Copy the password WordPress shows. The spaces are normal, so paste it as it is.

Step 2 - Open the integrations marketplace

Select Connect your tools at the bottom of the left sidebar, above your profile. Search for WordPress or find it under Browse Integrations.

Step 3 - Paste it in and connect

Select WordPress, paste what you copied into the fields Sam shows, and select Connect. Once it succeeds, it moves to your Connected tab.

When Sam asks, enter your site URL, your WordPress username and the application password. If you don't see Application Passwords, your site may need WordPress 5.6 or later, or HTTPS. Your hosting provider can help.

Leave every permission ticked

When you connect, you may see a screen of checkboxes, and some are easy to scroll past. Sam can only do what you allow. If you untick one, the matching actions in the list above will fail with a permission error.

If Sam says it can't reach WordPress later on, see When Sam can't reach one of your tools.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will Sam publish without asking?
New posts and pages start as drafts. Publishing a draft doesn't stop for a confirmation, so if you want to check it first, ask Sam to leave it as a draft and publish it yourself. Deleting a post always asks.

My site is on WordPress.com. Does this work?
No. This connection is for WordPress sites you host yourself, and it needs an application password.
